MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th March, 2019) Two children died in the Rukban refugee camp in Syria due to unhygienic conditions and malnutrition over just 24 hours two days ago, the joint Russia-Syria coordination center on refugee repatriation said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the center, the United States continues blocking the evacuation of the refugees from the camp, which is located in the US-controlled zone surrounding its military base in At Tanf. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in the camp, which is believed to host around 40,000 refugees, continues deteriorating.
"Two days ago two Syrian children died in the camp due to malnutrition, unhygienic conditions and infections.
It happened in the course of just one day. The absolutely destructive US position and its disregard of the lives of the purely innocent little residents of this 'death camp' is to blame," the statement read.
In the meantime, Elizabeth Hoff, the representative of the World Health Organization in Syria, has said that there were no doctors in the refugee camp, where life threatening infectious diseases continue spreading.
The center reiterated its call on the United States to grant bus convoys access to At Tanf and enable the refugees' exit.
