Two killed at Caribbean festivities in New York

NEW YORK,(APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -6th Sep,2016) - Two people were shot and killed early Monday in separate pre-dawn shootings during the annual "J'ouvert" Caribbean festival in New York -- the second straight year the event has turned deadly.

Despite ramped up security and promises from city officials that the event would be safer, the celebration leading into the carnivalesque West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn was once again marred by bloodshed.

Just before 4:00 am (0800 GMT), 17-year-old Tyreke Borel was shot in the chest on the southern edge of the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, according to the New York Police Department.

Borel was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

In a separate incident also in south Crown Heights, police found 22-year-old Tiarah Poyau with a gunshot wound to the face. She was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital, police said.

There have been no arrests and investigations into both incidents are ongoing, the NYPD said. Last week, police outlined heightened security measures, including additional uniformed officers, cameras and floodlights along the bustling parade route to prevent the recurring violence that has cast a cloud over the festivities that include live calypso music and vivid feathered costumes.
