BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 02nd May, 2019) A UK frigate and a US destroyer, both belonging to the Standing NATO Maritime Group One, have conducted training exercises in the Baltic Sea, the NATO Allied Maritime Command said.
"Standing #NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) ships USS Gravely and HMS Westminster conduct a towing approach exercise while sailing in the #BalticSea," the command tweeted on Wednesday.
A NATO naval group, consisting of theUSS destroyer Gravely, frigates K. Pulaski of the Polish Navy, Gokova of the Turkish Navy and Juan de Bourbon of the Spanish Navy, entered the Baltic Sea on April 18.
That same day, the Russian military said it was monitoring the vessels' activities.
Tensions between NATO and Russia have been high due to the alliance's increased military maneuvers in Europe, specifically near Russia's borders. NATO has been explaining its enhanced activities by the need to counteract a security threat allegedly posed by Russia. Russia has maintained that NATO's fears are unfounded.
