Two-thirds of Americans say they believe that human activity is altering Earth's climate, but less than half expect a crisis over global warming to occur in their lifetimes, a new Gallup poll revealed on Monday
"At the high end of the range of global warming consciousness, 66 percent of US adults say they believe global warming is caused by pollution from human activities rather than natural changes in the environment," a press release explaining the poll said.
Despite these views, fewer than half of Americans - 45 percent - think global warming will pose a serious threat in their own lifetime and 44 percent say they worry a great deal about climate change, the release said.
Gallup divided respondents into three groups: concerned believers, cool skeptics and the "mixed middle."
For the first time since 2001, a majority of Americans are classified as concerned believers, the release said.
The 51 percent categorized as such this year is statistically similar to the 47 percent to 50 percent recorded in each of the prior three years, from 2016 to 2018, but is up significantly over all years before that, the release added.
