LONDON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2021) UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will chair a meeting on Wednesday with her counterparts from China, France, Russia and the United States to discuss the ongoing conflicts and crises in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Yemen and Tigray and the role of the UN Security Council's five permanent members in maintaining international peace and security, the UK Foreign Office said.

"The P5 have clear shared interests in maintaining stability in volatile regions to prevent terrorism and keep our citizens safe," Truss was quoted as saying ahead of the meeting.

The foreign secretary will call on Russia and China to agree a coordinated international approach to Afghanistan following the Taliban (terrorist organization banned in Russia) takeover, according to the statement.

"If we want to avoid Afghanistan becoming a haven for global terror then the international community - including Russia and China - needs to act as one in its engagement with the Taliban," she said.

Truss, who is on her first overseas trip in her new role as the UK's foreign minister, will meet with her Security Council counterparts and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the high week of the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York.
