UK Foreign Secretary Calls on EU to Further Examine Chequers Plan Over UK-EU Talks Impasse

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt called on the European Union Saturday to continue talks in order to find a way for the UK Brexit proposals to be implemented, adding that London would not capitulate in face of the failure of the informal EU talks in Salzburg during which the UK departure from the European Union was discussed among other issues.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt called on the European Union Saturday to continue talks in order to find a way for the UK Brexit proposals to be implemented, adding that London would not capitulate in face of the failure of the informal EU talks in Salzburg during which the UK departure from the European Union was discussed among other issues.

On Friday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said following an informal two-day EU summit in the Austrian city of Salzburg that the United Kingdom would continue to prepare itself for a no-deal Brexit since the majority of proposals of her Chequers agreement were rejected by Brussels. The latest talks provoked another series of accusations brought against May by EU politicians, who blamed her for cherry-picking attempts.

"If you put us in a difficult corner, we will stand our ground - that is the kind of country we are ... [It is time for Brussels to] sit down and to talk to us about how we can make these sensible, concrete proposals actually work," Hunt told BBC broadcaster, commenting on the impasse of the talks in Salzburg.

He also stressed that London's approach toward Brexit negotiations was polite rather than weak.

According to the Chequers plan, adopted by the UK cabinet in July, London and Brussels could create a free trade area for goods and maintain a "common rulebook" for all goods. The European Union, however, rejected the proposal as undermining the single market.
