MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th February, 2019) UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid has warned his counterparts from the European Union that London's possible disorderly withdrawal from the bloc would lead to a disruption of joint policing systems and called on Brussels to make sure that all necessary backup arrangements are in place.
"I wanted to write to you now to ensure readiness for the alternative contingency arrangements should that become necessary. We must do all we can to minimise operational disruption in this vital area ... I believe the public in every country would expect us to continue to cooperate on these matters as much as possible," Javid said in a letter, as quoted by The Guardian newspaper late on Monday.
The home secretary reminded that the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union without a deal would entail disruptions with the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), the suspects' extradition and exchange of data.
Javid also noted that no backup mechanism to exchange information on airline passengers had been created yet.
Earlier in February, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the UK Metropolitan Police Richard Martin warned that police officers in the United Kingdom would see their powers to arrest foreign suspects significantly impaired in the event of a no-deal Brexit, as the UK law enforcement will no longer benefit from the EAW.
The United Kingdom is set to leave the European Union on March 29, but UK Prime Minister Theresa May has so far failed to secure the parliament's approval for the divorce agreement negotiated with Brussels, which could potentially lead to a no-deal Brexit as the bloc has been reluctant to reopen the talks.
