MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) UK security services were carrying out 676 live investigations as of the end of June, local media reported on Tuesday citing a spokesman for UK Prime Minister Theresa May.
The spokesman pointed out that 17 plotted terrorist acts, including 13 Islamist and four far-right, had been averted in the country since 2017, Sky news reported.
The spokesman added that within the day, May had had regular briefings with the representatives of local security forces concerning the car-ramming incident in London that she called "shocking."
On Tuesday morning, a Ford Fiesta deliberately crashed into the security barrier outside the Houses of Parliament after having collided with several cyclists and pedestrians.
The driver was detained shortly after the incident which the investigators qualify as a terrorist attack as it happened in a popular tourist location.
Over the past few years, the terror threat has been high in the United Kingdom as the country has faced a number of deadly terror acts, such as the attack on London Bridge, Manchester Arena, Finsbury Park Mosque, and Westminster Bridge, where a British national drove his car into pedestrians before smashing into the Houses of Parliament's fence. In 2017, 36 people died in terror acts in the United Kingdom, which is more than in any other European country, according to the Europol.
