UK Minister of State for Immigration Caroline Nokes announced on Thursday that children, brought to the country as part of the clearance of the makeshift migrant camp in the French city of Calais, would be allowed to stay even if they did not qualify for a refugee status.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th September, 2018) UK Minister of State for Immigration Caroline Nokes announced on Thursday that children, brought to the country as part of the clearance of the makeshift migrant camp in the French city of Calais, would be allowed to stay even if they did not qualify for a refugee status.
According to the minister, 220 youngsters out of 769 were transferred to the country as "the first tranche of these cases" under the Dublin III regulation, a piece of EU legislation which stipulates families' right to stay together. Some of the cases "did not qualify for Refugee or Humanitarian protection under the existing rules," and the United Kingdom introduced a new form of leave for such cases in June 2018, the minister clarified.
"It is our view that all those [remaining] 549 transferred from Calais to the UK to reunite with family should be able to remain here with their family members. In keeping with our commitments to family unity, we do not consider that it would be in their best interests to separate children from their families, having received significant support from UK authorities to reunite and integrate.
It is our intention to introduce, by laying a new Immigration Rule, a new form of leave for any of these cases that have not already been considered refugees," Nokes said in a statement, posted on the parliament's website.
The minister stressed that the new "leave will only be available for those that were brought over as part of the Calais clearance exercise in October 2016, who were under the age of 18 at this time, and who had recognised family ties in the UK."
Since 2015, Calais, as well as other northern French cities, has faced an influx of refugees and asylum seekers heading to the United Kingdom. The situation led to the creation of the infamous refugee "jungle" camp in Calais, which was dismantled in 2016. At that time, London voiced readiness to take in the children claiming family links with the United Kingdom.
