Ukraine Calls For Abolition Of UN Security Council Permanent Members' Veto Power

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st November, 2018) A representative of the Ukrainian delegation said on Wednesday that it was necessary to abolish the UN Security Council permanent members' veto power.

"I cannot but emphasize that the need for UN members to review the veto right role in the Security Council work is one of the most important priorities for my country," the representative said at the UN General Assembly meeting.

He added there had been "too many cases" when Security Council permanent members used the veto right in order to violate their "obligations to maintain international peace and security.

"

"So, we support the abolition of the veto right and all the initiatives aimed at restricting the veto right use," the representative concluded.

Using the veto power, permanent members of the UN Security Council can veto any "substantive" resolution, while a permanent member's absence or abstention does not prevent draft resolutions from being adopted.

Ukraine has already called for veto right limitations, accusing certain states of abusing their veto powers.
