The Ukrainian Interior Ministry will buy 55 helicopters from aerospace giant Airbus as part of its plan to build the third biggest "unified" helicopter fleet in Europe, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on Monday.
"The Ukrainian Interior Ministry is building its own unified aviation system.
Under our contract with the French government, we will purchase 55 Airbus helicopters," Avakov was quoted as saying in a statement.
All aircraft will be fresh from the German and French assembly lines, he added. The first two helicopters are expected next week. Shipments will continue into 2021.
The helicopters will be used by emergency agencies, border guards, police and the National Guard to patrol borders, put out fires and search for wanted or missing people, according to the minister.
