The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) demands a public report by law enforcement on results of investigation into crimes against journalists, head of NUJU Sergiy Tomilenko said.
"The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine continues to demand heads' of law enforcement agencies public report on results of investigation into crimes against journalists. We demand to stop the wave of physical aggression against journalists and their activists," Tomilenko wrote on his Facebook page.
He stressed that more than 160 cases of attacks against journalists had been registered in Ukraine since the beginning of 2017. According to him, there is not a single precedent of effective punishment for those who attacked journalists.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Humans Rights (OHCHR), from May to August 2018 there was an increase in the number of attacks on Ukrainian journalists. The OHCHR recorded 32 violations of the rights of media workers and civil society activists which was three times higher than for the previous reporting period.
Besides that, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has repeatedly expressed concern about the lack of media freedom in the country. In March, OSCE media freedom chief Harlem Desir called on the Ukrainian authorities to properly investigate all cases of attacks on journalists.
