A Tunisian appeals court today decided to release UN Libya arms embargo expert Moncef Kartas, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Tuesday
"We have been informed that earlier today a Tunisian appeals court has reviewed the case against Mr. Kartas and has decided to release him. We are very encouraged by this development; we look forward to confirming his actual release from detention," Dujarric said.
The spokesman added that the United Nations at the moment attempts to obtain additional information regarding the status of the legal proceedings against Kartas.
In March, Tunisian authorities arrested Kartas as he was leaving the Tunis airport. As a member of the UN Security Council's Sanctions Panel of Experts on Libya, Kartas has diplomatic immunity.
The Tunisian Interior Ministry has said it arrested Kartas after a lengthy investigation that resulted in the seizure of documents containing sensitive national security information, along with technical equipment for jamming and intercepting communications.
