The United Nations was dissatisfied with the list of candidates for the Syrian constitutional committee, but continues talks on its composition, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said on Wednesday at a joint press conference with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said in February that the United Nations believed six people in the list of candidates for the Syrian constitutional committee should be replaced.
"It is not a secret that the UN was not pleased with the Names that were given in December last year.
But as I have said, we are having very serious and good and in-depth discussions, and I am hopeful that we would be able to move forward," Pedersen said.
The creation of the committee was first agreed upon during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian city of Sochi in January 2018. The body is expected to include the representatives of the Syrian government, opposition and civil society. The United Nations has been helping to draft the list of the Syrian constitutional committee members.
