UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen learned about the efforts Homs has made toward national reconciliation and stability during his visit to the western Syrian province on Tuesday, a source in Homs' provincial administration told Sputnik on Wednesday
Pedersen arrived in Damascus on Sunday and met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem. The envoy praised the progress that had been made toward political settlement in the Arab country after the talks.
"Pedersen has learned about Homs' experience in achieving national reconciliation and returning refugees to their districts. Homs Governor Talal Barazi briefed him on the security and stability in the province, recovery of the economy, revival of all the sectors and plans for the future," the source said.
The source added that Barazi had also briefed Pedersen on the authorities' refugee repatriation efforts, pointing out that around 3,700 Syrians had already returned to Homs from neighboring Lebanon.
"The special envoy said that he was pleased to see life in Homs returning to normal," the source added.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups, as well as militant and terrorist organizations. Since the Syrian government has regained control over most of the country's territories that were seized by terrorists, it is now focused on creating favorable conditions for repatriating refugees with the help of foreign states and international organizations, including the United Nations.
