UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th November, 2018) The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, which deals with matters regarding social, humanitarian and human rights issues, adopted a third resolution on the alleged human rights violations in Russia's Crimean Peninsula, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
The resolution was passed in a 67-26 vote, with 82 abstentions. In the previous two years, similar resolutions were passed with a 70-26 vote, with 77 abstentions in 2016 and 76 abstentions in 2017.
The resolution says that Crimea has been increasing its pressure on religious minorities such as followers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kiev Patriarchate, Protestants, Muslims, Catholics, Greek Catholics and Jehovah's Witnesses.
The document was prepared by Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Marshall Islands, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Moldova, Slovakia, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, France, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Estonia.
Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014 after former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown as a result of a wave of violence in Kiev. Russia and the Crimean authorities have repeatedly invited foreign observers to visit the peninsula to make sure no mass human violations were taking place.
