UN Secretary General Expresses Concern Over Rise in Violence in CAR

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th November, 2018) UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres late on Saturday expressed concern over the growing violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) as a number of attacks have occurred this week.

On Thursday, militants attacked the camp for internally displaced people in the town of Alindao, killing at least 30 people. An attack on the base of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in the village of Gbambia followed the next day and resulted in one victim, a peacekeeper.

"The Secretary General is greatly concerned at the rise in violence in recent days in the Central African Republic .

.. The Secretary-General recalls that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers as well as those against defenseless civilians may constitute war crimes and calls on the Central African Republic authorities to investigate them and swiftly bring those responsible to justice,"Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN secretary general, said in a statement, attributed to Guterres.

Since 2012, the car has been gripped by an internal conflict involving the government and armed militias.

MINUSCA was established in 2014 to promote disarmament and demobilization and to promote human rights in the conflict-torn country.
