UN Security Council OKs to Ship Cameras for Divided Families' Video Calls to DPRK- Reports

The United Nations Security Council's committee on North Korea sanctions granted a sanctions waiver to shipment of equipment to the Asian country that will be used for holding video conferences between members of families that were separated due to the 1950-1953 Korean War, as a result of which Korea was split into two states, local media reported on Saturday, citing unnamed diplomatic sources

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 09th March, 2019) The United Nations Security Council's committee on North Korea sanctions granted a sanctions waiver to shipment of equipment to the Asian country that will be used for holding video conferences between members of families that were separated due to the 1950-1953 Korean War, as a result of which Korea was split into two states, local media reported on Saturday, citing unnamed diplomatic sources.

The committee voted on Friday unilaterally to fulfill South Korea's request to enable the shipment of cameras and other equipment for video reunions to North Korea, Yonhap news agency added.

Between 2005 and 2007, seven video conferences for separated families were held. However, in 2007, video reunions were suspended over the need to repair video conferencing rooms in the two neighboring countries. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed at their summit, held last September, to resume these conferences.

Apart from video conferences, meetings for thousands of people separated by the Korean War have been held since mid-1980s.
