UN Security Council Passes US Resolution to Address Peacekeeper Sex Abuse - Haley

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) The UN Security Council has adopted a draft resolution that would toughen actions against peacekeepers who abuse civilians, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in a meeting on Friday.

"The draft resolution received 15 votes in favor, the draft resolution has been adopted unanimously," Haley said after the vote.

In recent years, some UN peacekeepers have reportedly been involved in sexual abuse, especially in South Sudan and other African countries.

The new resolution allows the United Nations to suspend without pay peacekeepers who believed to be involved in any type of misconduct and discontinue contracts with these individuals.

Haley explained that when United States was drafting the resolution, it was guided by the principle of transparency.

The resolution demands timely and accurate reporting of peacekeeping performance failures and establishes accountability when incidents occur, Haley added.

Haley said the measure will make UN peacekeeping missions more reliable and more efficient instrument of ensuring security.

The resolution was drafted in response to calls made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
