The United Nations thanked on Monday the command of the Russian troops in Syria for ensuring the security of a humanitarian convoy as it made its way to the Rukban refugee camp on the Syrian-Jordanian border.
On November 3, Russian military police escorted the UN humanitarian convoy, which traveled from Damascus to a 55-kilometer (34-mile) zone controlled by the United States in the area. Russian military helicopters provided air support. UN representatives delivered food, medicines, and other necessities weighing some 450 tonnes.
In his letter, UN humanitarian coordinator in Syria Ali Zaatari expressed his gratitude toward the Russian troops for their help in organizing the convoy, which reached those in need after long negotiations and a complex coordination process.
He also noted that while the delivery of humanitarian aid was a big positive step for the refugees, the situation in the camp remained critical. According to the United Nations, the delivered humanitarian cargo will only cover the needs of Rukban's inhabitants for a month.
