UNSC Unanimously Renews UN Assistance Mission in Iraq for One Year

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) until May 31, 2020.

"The result of the voting is as follows: the draft resolution received 15 votes in favor, the draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 2470 of 2019," President of the Security Council Indonesian Ambassador to the UN Dian Triansyah Djani said on Tuesday during open consultations on the situation in the country.

The draft resolution, sponsored by the United States, calls to advance an inclusive political dialogue and assist the Iraqi government in holding elections.

The measure also aims to enhance security programs by reintegrating former terrorist members as well as promote economic development, humanitarian assistance, and human rights.

The text of the document also requests the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit a report to the Security Council on the progress of the UN mission in Iraq every three months.

Iraq has long been suffering from the activities of various terrorist groups. In 2014, vast territories of the state were occupied by jihadists of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, outlawed in Russia). The Iraqi army has successfully fought back against IS. In the end of 2017, then Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared an end to the country's fight against the infamous terrorist group as Iraq's troops re-established complete control over the country's Syrian border.
