UPDATE - German Social Democrats Fail to Win Bremen Vote For the First Time in 70 Years - Exit Poll

BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 27th May, 2019) Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) which is a part of Angela Merkel-led ruling coalition, suffered historic losses and failed to gain support of the majority of the voters during the state elections in Bremen for the first time in over 70 years, an exit poll revealed.

The SPD party received 24.5 percent of the vote, while the ruling CDU party gained 25.5 percent, according to the data released by Welt news channel.

Thus, the SPD lost at least 8.3 points.

This is a heavy blow to the SPD party which dominated Bremen elections for over 70 years.

The head of the SPD, Andrea Nahles, described the results of the elections as "extremely disappointing" for her party.

Both the SPD and Merkel's alliance - Christian Democrats (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party the CSU - suffered considerable losses in European Parliament elections on Sunday, bleeding support to the Green party.
