US Action Group For Iran Aims To Topple Country's Government - Iranian Foreign Minister

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th August, 2018) The United States has created the Iran Action Group in order to overthrow the Iranian government, Iranian Foreign Minister Jabad Zarif said Sunday.

On Thursday, US State Secretary Mike Pompeo announced the creation of the Iran Action Group that will be responsible for overseeing Washingtons response to what he called Tehrans destabilizing activities. Pompeo said the group would effectively coordinate efforts to counter Irans behavior and change it while addressing all manifestations of threats by Tehran.

"65 years ago today, the US overthrew the popularly elected democratic government of Dr. [Mohammad] Mossadegh, restoring the dictatorship & subjugating Iranians for the next 25 years. Now an �Action Group dreams of doing the same through pressure, misinformation & demagoguery.

Never again," Zarif wrote on Twitter.

On August 19, 1953, then-Iranian Prime Minister Mossadegh was ousted as a result of the coup detat orchestrated by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

US-Iranian relations remain tense. On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced that his country would exit the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. On August 7, Washington re-instated the first package of its sanctions against Iran, previously lifted under the deal. The sanctions target Iran's acquisition of Dollar bank notes, trade in gold and other metals, transactions related to the Iranian rial, as well as other countries' transactions and trade activities with Iran. Another wave of US sanctions on Irans energy sector is expected to be re-imposed in November.
