WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) Maritime forces from the United States and its allies successfully completed a series of military drills, including a mine clearing exercise, in the Persian Gulf, the US Navy said in a news release on Thursday.
"Approximately 4,500 US Marines and sailors participated in the integrated amphibious training, which included simulated air defense training, mine countermeasure training, quick-reaction force drills, deck landing qualifications, tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel rehearsals as well as visit, board, search and seizure exercises (VBSS)," the release said.
US Navy and coalition assets completed the US 5th Fleet Counter Mine and Maritime Security Exercise September 18, the release said.
Taking place in Djibouti, the Theater Amphibious Combat Rehersal (TACR) exercise enhanced readiness for littoral and mine countermeasures that are needed to protect the critical Bab al-Mandeb choke point, the release noted.
TACR was one of three simultaneous exercises intended to demonstrate the US and allied commitment to freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce wherever international law allows.
