US Begins Reducing Rates of Violent Crime in Cities - Attorney General Sessions

The United States has begun reducing rates of violent crime such as rape and murder, which had soared in years prior to President Donald Trumps inauguration, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a speech at a Rotary Club in the state of Iowa on Friday.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The United States has begun reducing rates of violent crime such as rape and murder, which had soared in years prior to President Donald Trumps inauguration, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a speech at a Rotary Club in the state of Iowa on Friday.

"Preliminary indications based on publicly available information from 88 large cities suggest that violent crime overall was down in the first quarter of 2018 compared to 2017," Sessions said. "Violent crime went down 6.8 percent and murder went down 5.5 percent."

Prior to 2017, the violent crime rate went up rose by nearly 7 percent, including an 11 percent increase in rapes and 20 percent rise in murders, Sessions claimed.

Sessions noted in his speech that crime and economic prosperity are linked.

"When crime rates go up, businesses dont want to invest, property values go down, kids cant learn in school, and precious human potential is wasted," Sessions said. "If we allow crime to rise, it starts a vicious cycle of crime, poverty, and more crime."

Sessions added that stemming the influx of illegal aliens is one key to a continued reduction in crime.
