WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd September, 2021) Scenes of horse-mounted US border agents accosting Haitian migrants this week illustrate Biden administration abuses of a pandemic-related health measure to justify mass deportations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said on Wednesday.
"The horrifying videos of US horse-mounted Border Patrol agents charging toward Haitian migrants in Del Rio, Texas is the latest in a line of human rights abuses resulting from the Biden administration's continuation of Trump-era border policies," the ACLU said in a press release.
Since March 2020, the US government has turned people away at the border using Title 42, a purported public health policy to stem the spread of communicable diseases from abroad, as a tool to justify mass deportations, the release said.
Moreover, the Department of Homeland Security is now carrying out its announced plans to escalate rapid deportation flights to Haiti, the release added.
However, media reports indicate the US is resettling a large number of Haitian migrants in the United States.
In August, the US used Title 42 to expel more than 91,000 migrantsof more than 208,000 border-crossers stopped by Border Patrol agents, according to the Customs and Border Patrol (CPB) agency.
The ACLU reiterated its call for the Biden administration to immediately stop using the health measure to mitigate a surge of border crossings.
