The United States cannot confirm recent reports that the Syrian military used chemical weapons its attacks in Idlib province, but Washington is monitoring the situation, US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey said in a congressional testimony on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The United States cannot confirm recent reports that the Syrian military used chemical weapons its attacks in Idlib province, but Washington is monitoring the situation, US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey said in a congressional testimony on Wednesday.

"We are watching [the situation] very closely, also the reports of chemical weapons use. So far, we cannot confirm it, but we are watching it," Jeffrey told the US House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee.

On Tuesday, the US State Department said that Washington was gathering information an alleged chlorine attack in northwest Syria on May 19.
