WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th April, 2019) The US-led coalition conducted strikes against the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) this week during an operation by Iraqi Security Forces in the city of Wadi Ashai, Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release on Thursday.
"Operation Inherent Resolve supported Iraqi Security Forces against Daesh targets in Wadi Ashai, April 24, 2019, disrupting their ability to regroup and reorganize," the release said.
The IS caliphate, the release said, has been defeated in the region since March 2019 and remaining fighters have been trying to move weapons and personnel into Iraq to set the conditions for a resurgence.
Iraq has long been suffering from activities of various terrorist groups. In 2014, vast territories of the middle Eastern state were occupied by the Islamic State.
The Iraqi army has successfully fought back against the Islamic State over the past year. In December, then Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared an end to the country's fight against the Islamic State, as Iraqi troops re-established complete control over the country's Syrian border.
