US Cyber Command Cut Internet Access of Internet Research Agency During Midterms - Reports

The US Cyber Command blocked the internet access of Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA) that allegedly sought to interfere in the 2018 US midterm elections, media reported on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) The US Cyber Command blocked the internet access of Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA) that allegedly sought to interfere in the 2018 US midterm elections, media reported on Tuesday.

The strike against the IRA was part of the first offensive cyber campaign against Russia designed to fend off attempts to meddle in US elections, the Washington Post reported, citing several US officials.

The report noted that the action had been hailed a success by Pentagon officials, with some US Senators crediting US Cyber Command with averting Russian interference in the midterms.

Last February, the Internet Research Agency was indicted by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller for alleged attempts to manipulate the 2016 presidential election.

Washington has been accusing Russia of meddling in the presidential election. The United States has claimed that Moscow tried to influence voters via social media and hacked email accounts of the US Democratic Party.

Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, arguing that they had never been substantiated and insisting that Moscow does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
