US Democrats distrust of the nations capitalist economic system has surged to its highest level in nearly a decade, a Gallup poll revealed on Monday.
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) US Democrats distrust of the nations capitalist economic system has surged to its highest level in nearly a decade, a Gallup poll revealed on Monday.
"The major change among Democrats has been a less upbeat attitude toward capitalism, dropping to 47 percent positive this year - lower than in any of the three previous measures," a press release summarizing the poll said. "The drop in Democrats' positive views of capitalism this year has for the first time left Democrats more positive about socialism as a concept than about capitalism."
Republicans and independents who lean Republican, favor capitalism over socialism by a 71-to-16 percent margin, according to the release.
The shift is reflected in US Senator Bernie Sanders challenge to 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and more recently the Democratic Primary victory of candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, in a state of New York congressional district, the release noted.
However, Democrats outright approval of socialism has not changed materially since 2010, with 57 percent having a positive view in the latest survey, the release said.
