US Idea To Hold Elections In Donbas Under UN Control Contradicts Minsk Accords - Sergey Lavrov

The proposal of US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker to hold elections in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region under the auspices of the United Nations contradicts the Minsk agreements, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) The proposal of US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker to hold elections in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region under the auspices of the United Nations contradicts the Minsk agreements, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

"The Minsk accords were approved by the UN Security Council resolution, becoming the part of international law. Kiev does not want to implement them. And then the [US] representatives, in particular the US representative for the Ukrainian settlement, Mr.

Kurt Volker, ... comes up with a rule replacing the international legal act which is the UNSC resolution. His rules state that the UN should deal with the elections, and not Kiev, Donetsk and Luhansk, as stated in the Minsk agreements ... There is no need to explain the difference between the approach [proposed by Volker] and the one agreed on [in Minsk]," Lavrov told reporters at a press briefing during the Munich Security Conference.
