US Imposes Sanctions on 3 Individuals, 6 Entities in South Sudan - Treasury

The United States has imposed sanctions on three individuals and six entities over their role in the conflict in South Sudan, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in a statement on Friday.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th December, 2018) The United States has imposed sanctions on three individuals and six entities over their role in the conflict in South Sudan, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in a statement on Friday.

The sanctions target South Sudanese nationals Gregory Vasili Dimitry, Obac William Olawo and Israel Ziv, as well as Africana General Trading, Crown Auto Trade, Global Iz Group, Global Law Enforcement and Security, Global N.T.M. and Golden Wings Aviation, OFAC said.

The State Department clarified in a separate statement that all three individuals had been designated over their rolse in the conflict in South Sudan.

"Israel Ziv and Obac William Olawo were designated ... for being leaders of entities whose actions expanded or extend the conflict in South Sudan," it said.�Meanwhile, Dmitry "was designated for actions that have undermined peace, stability and security in South Sudan."

All six companies are owned or controlled by Ziv and Olawo, the State Department said.

South Sudan gained independence from the Republic of Sudan after the 2011 referendum, in which 98.8 percent of the voters supported the move. The country has been marred in an ethnic-based civil war since President Salva Kiir of the Dinka tribe accused Vice President Riek Machar, an ethnic Nuer, of planning a coup in 2013.
