A US federal grand jury indicted two Iranian citizens for deploying SamSam ransomware to collect more than $6 million in ransom payments and cause $30 million in losses to victims in the United States, the Justice Department said in a press release on Wednesday.
"A federal grand jury returned an indictment unsealed today in Newark, New Jersey charging Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34, and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27, both of Iran, in a 34-month-long international computer hacking and extortion scheme involving the deployment of sophisticated ransomware," the release said.
More than 200 individuals as well as hospitals, municipalities and public institutions, including the cities of Atlanta and Newark, the port of San Diego and the Colorado Department of Transportation, were affected by the hacking scheme, according to the Justice Department.
