ABU DHABI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th January, 2019) The participation of the United States in the global fight against climate change would accelerate the implementation of Paris climate accord, Sun Xiansheng, the secretary general of the International Energy Forum, told Sputnik in an interview on Sunday.
"The United States is a great and important country that is most developed, so really we need more involvement of the United States for the climate change and energy transition. I feel that the United States will be in some ways involved. However, without them the other countries will still go ahead and develop but maybe at slower speed.
With the US involvement it will be faster," Sun said when asked about the slower implementation of the Paris climate deal due to some countries scaling back their commitments after US withdrawal.
The Paris climate deal, created within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, went into force on November 4, 2016. The deal aims to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels by means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
