US Judge OKs Deposition of Commerce Chief Over Census Citizenship Question - New York AG

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) A Federal judge approved a motion for the head of the US Commerce Department to be deposed over plans to include a citizenship question on the census, New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a statement.

"A federal judge just granted our motion to depose Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross - part of our lawsuit over the Trump admin's plan to demand citizenship status on the #2020Census," Underwood said in a Tweet on Friday. "We will keep working to ensure a full and fair Census."

In March, the Trump administration announced that a question about citizenship would be included in the 2020 census forms. Critics have argued that many minorities will not respond to the census to avoid answering the question, and will be underrepresented in the final tally.

The US Constitution requires the government to count every person living in the United States every 10 years, not just American citizens.
