US Justice Department, DHS Say Absurd That Advocacy Groups Sue Trump Over Asylum Ban

The lawsuit by US advocacy groups against President Donald Trump's order on Central America asylum seekers is an irrational action in trying to stop the flow of illegal migrants to the United States, the departments of Justice and Homeland Security (DHS) said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) The lawsuit by US advocacy groups against President Donald Trump's order on Central America asylum seekers is an irrational action in trying to stop the flow of illegal migrants to the United States, the departments of Justice and Homeland Security (DHS) said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

The two agencies issued the statement after District Court Judge Jon Tigar ordered to halt the US president's executive action banning illegal aliens on the US-Mexico border from applying for asylum.

"It is absurd that a set of advocacy groups can be found to have standing to sue to stop the entire Federal government from acting so that illegal aliens can receive a government benefit to which they are not entitled," the statement said.

Trump's executive order was challenged by a number of advocacy groups, including the American Civil liberties Union (ACLU) and the Southern Poverty Law Center. A hearing in the case took place in San Francisco on Monday evening.

The DHS and the Justice Department added that it is absolutely lawful for the US federal government to give the benefit of asylum to only certain people in order to control immigration in the national interest.

On Friday, Trump signed the proclamation denying asylum to illegal immigrants seeking to enter the United States as a caravan of several thousand migrants from Central America approached the US border with Mexico.
