WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Democratic Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard has filed a defamation lawsuit against former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for publicly calling her a Russian asset, Gabbard's counsel said in a court filing on Wednesday.
"Plaintiffs Tulsi Gabbard and Tulsi Now, Inc. bring this lawsuit against Defendant Hillary Rodham Clinton for defamation," the lawsuit stated.
The lawsuit states that in October 2019 Clinton falsely stated in public that Tulsi - an Army National Guard officer and US Congresswoman - is "a Russian asset." As a result, the document adds, Clinton's comment has harmed Gabbard and American democracy, and she must be held accountable for "intentionally trying to distort the truth in the middle of a critical Presidential election.
"
The lawsuit states that Clinton allegedly sought retribution against Gabbard after the congresswoman publicly endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders in February 2016 when he was a Democratic presidential candidate for the US elections.
Clinton made the comment when she was a guest on the podcast "Campaign HQ With David Plouffe." Plouffe is a former Obama campaign adviser.
Gabbard is seeking relief for the damages caused by Clinton's statements and an injunctive relief prohibiting the publication or republication of the alleged defamatory statements.
