US Senate Approves Resolution to Overturn IRS Guidance on Donor Disclosure

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) The US Senate approved a measure that would overturn an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidance limiting donor disclosure for certain tax-exempt groups.

The senate passed the measure in a 50-49 vote on Wednesday, with Republican Senator Susan Collins joining her Democratic colleagues. Republican Thom Tillis did not vote.

"Americans deserve to know who is trying to influence their votes. The Senate today sent a clear message: dark money has no place in our elections," Senator Dianne Feinstein said in PRESS release following the vote.

The measure now moves to the House of Representatives. Feinstein urged her House colleagues to pass the resolution to keep foreign money out of US elections.

On July 16, the US Department of the Treasury and IRS announced that the IRS will no longer require certain tax-exempt organizations to file personally identifiable information about their donors as part of their annual return. Critics have said that this rule change will make it easier for "dark money" to influence US elections.
