WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th October, 2018) US Senator Lindsey Graham in a statement expressed skepticism over Saudi Arabia's latest explanation for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia's Prosecutor General announced that Khashoggi died after a quarrel erupted inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month, according to the state run Saudi Press Agency. The prosecutor also said 18 Saudi nationals have been detained.
"To say that I am skeptical of the new Saudi narrative about Mr. Khashoggi is an understatement," Graham said on Friday in a twitter post linked to a report about the Saudi prosecutor's announcement.
White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders in a statement after the announcement on Friday said the United States acknowledges Saudi Arabia taking action against the suspects allegedly involved and will follow the probe and support due process. Sanders also said the White House is "saddened" to hear confirmation of Khashoggi's death.
Turkish authorities told media earlier this week that they had evidence linking the murder of Khashoggi, a former Washington Post columnist and US resident, to senior level Saudi government officials. Saudi Arabia had initially denied any involvement in the journalist's disappearance.
