WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) US President Donald Trump must denounce Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's regime and recognize the National Assembly as the country's legitimate government, US Senators Marco Rubio and Bob Menendez said in a letter.
"We therefore request that you condemn the Maduro regime's rule as illegitimate, and formally recognize the Venezuelan National Assembly as the only legitimate democratic institution remaining in the country's national government," the letter said on Wednesday.
The senators added that Maduro's regime held fraudulent elections earlier this year and failed to meet international standards for a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
Russia has been supporting Venezuela's sovereignty and maintaining that the country should develop without external interference. Officials from both countries have been holding bilateral meetings on various levels to strengthen their ties.
