Three Democratic senators have filed a lawsuit to challenge US President Donald Trump's appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general alleging that the president violated the US Constitution's appointment clause, according to a joint press release issued on Monday.

"The Senators' complaint asks the Court to declare Whitaker's appointment unconstitutional and to enjoin him from serving as, or carrying out the duties of, Acting Attorney General," Senators Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse and Mazie Hirono said in the release.
