US Special Envoy for North Korea to Visit Moscow This Week - State Department

US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will visit Moscow this week for talks with Russian officials on the denuclearization of the peninsula, the State Department announced in a release on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th April, 2019) US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will visit Moscow this week for talks with Russian officials on the denuclearization of the peninsula, the State Department announced in a release on Tuesday.

"US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will travel to Moscow April 17-18 to meet with Russian officials to discuss efforts to advance the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea," the release said.

Earlier in April, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said that Russian officials were looking forward to seeing Biegun in Russia in April.

Morgulov visited Washington, DC in January and later described the discussion on the situation on the Korean Peninsula as "productive."

Biegun confirmed at the end of the talks that the United States highly values Russia's role and sees Moscow as a vital part of the process to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, Morgulov added.

Morgulov explained that his visit came in response to Biegun's visit to Moscow in October and the talks in Washington, DC were a second round of such consultations with the US special envoy.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that a third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would be a good idea. The two leaders met for their historic first summit in Singapore last June. The second summit in Hanoi this February broke down after Trump walked away from talks, saying Kim asked that the United States fully lift sanctions against North Korea.

Kim said in a speech in parliament earlier in the day that the United States was talking a lot about a third summit, but stressed that the resumption of such a summit is not inviting to North Korea.

Kim urged the United States to approach him with a "bold decision" on how to move forward on denuclearization before year end, adding that his personal relations with Trump remain good.
