MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th January, 2019) US Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday he was upset by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's rejection of the compromise offer President Donald Trump made to Democrats to reopen the government.
"What president offered was a good-faith compromise... It was disappointing to see Speaker Pelosi reject the offer before the president gave his speech," he told Fox news.
Trump has been meeting rank-and-file Democrats in Congress for weeks to secure $5.7 billion in border wall funding in exchange for protections for migrants.
On Saturday, he proposed a three-year reprieve from deportation for migrants who had been brought to the country illegally as children and for those holding temporary protected status.
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the concession as a "non-starter," saying the Democrats wanted a permanent solution for both groups of immigrants.
Pence said the president had essentially "set the table for a deal that will address the crisis on our border," while what they had seen from the Democrat leadership so far was "just soundbites."
The vice president said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had agreed to bring the deal to the floor on Tuesday in a bid to end the partial shutdown of the Federal government, currently in its 30th day.
