WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) The United States wants to identify areas in which it can work together with China despite the tensions caused by the ongoing trade dispute between Washington and Beijing, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday.

"We want to find places, where we can work together," Pompeo said in a video conference during the World Economic Forum in Davos. "But the course of the relationship will be determined by the principles that America stands by."

He pointed to free and open seas, along with fair and reciprocal trade arrangements as two of those principles.

"We hope that China will adopt policies that are consistent with that. If they do, then I'm very confident that both our nations can thrive and prosper together," Pompeo said.

China and the United States have been engaged in a trade war since US President Trump announced in June that $50 billion worth of Chinese goods would be subject to 25 percent tariffs in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs, levying duties on hundreds of billions of Dollars of goods.

In early December, President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a truce in their escalating trade war after meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, but the two countries have yet to reach a final agreement in their dispute.
