The United States warned Russia that any attempts to interfere in the 2020 US presidential election would further deteriorate bilateral relations and will not be tolerated, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday
"Interference in American elections is unacceptable," Pompeo told reporters. "If the Russians were engaged in that in 2020 it would our relationship at an even worse place than it has been, and encourage them not to do that. We would not tolerate that."
The United States has accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 US presidential election, particularly through social media.
Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in the US political system, saying that such activities go counter to the principles and practice of Russian foreign policy.
On April 18, the US Justice Department released the final report of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 US presidential election.
While the report said there was no collusion, it did say Russia attempted to interfere in the election.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Mueller report does not contain any substantiated evidence to support the allegations that Russia interfered in the US electoral process.
