"The security agencies prevented plans to kill demonstrators at mass rallies on January 23. One person was killed in a shootout, the second is at large," Prieto said, as quoted by the Correo del Orinoco newspaper on Tuesday.

He noted that grenades, assault rifles, silencers and military uniforms had been discovered during the operation.

Fabio Zavarse Pabon, commander of one of defense districts, noted that the country's armed forces, together with the security forces of Zulia, had managed to eliminate the terrorist cell consisting of three people who were hiding in an apartment in the Isla Dorada residential complex in the city of Maracaibo.

Late on Tuesday, protests against President Nicolas Maduro began in various cities of Venezuela. Marches of opponents of the authorities, and supporters of the incumbent president are planned for Wednesday. According to local media, two people were already killed and another two were injured in the protests.
