MEXICO CITY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) The Venezuelan Embassy to Lima announced on Wednesday that it was suspending consular services until Peru guarantees security to the mission.
According to Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, the embassy in Lima was attacked on January 10, on the day of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's inauguration, "by a group of bandits who entered the building."
"The Embassy of the Bolivar Republic of Venezuela in Peru informs everyone that consular assistance will be suspended until the host country guarantees due security as stipulated by international agreements," the embassy said in a statement.
Earlier in January, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said following the meeting of the Lima Group foreign ministers that the union did not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro's new presidential term and urged him to call a new presidential election. Peru also banned Maduro and his administration from entry and recalled its charge d'affaires, Rosa Alvarez Nunez, from Venezuela.
