MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2021) The volcanic eruption which began on Sunday on the Spanish island of La Palma (Canary Islands) is likely to last from 24 to 84 days, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute stated on Wednesday.

"Using the information about the duration of the historical eruptions that occurred on the island of La Palma, a possible answer to this question (of how long it may last) could be obtained. Therefore, it would be acceptable to specify that we move in the range of a duration between 24 and 84 days, with a geometric average duration of 55 days," the organization wrote on its Facebook page.

Scientists also published a table of six formerly known volcanic eruptions on La Palma. The longest one was the eruption of the Tehuya volcano in 1585. It lasted for 84 days. In comparison, the last eruption on the island occurred at Teneguia in 1971 and lasted for 24 days.

On Sunday, Cumbre Vieja volcano began erupting on La Palma. To date, more than 6,000 people have been evacuated, and over 300 houses have been damaged, according to the latest official figures.
