UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) Russian High Commissioner for Human Right Tatiana Moskalkova told reporters on Tuesday that the detention of RIA Novosti Ukraine portal head Kirill Vyshinsky was one of the main topics during a meeting she had with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.
"This was one of the key topics that was discussed with Michelle Bachelet," Moskalkova said. "Moreover, I sent her an official letter requesting her assistance in this case."
Moskalkova said she regretted that the arrest of the journalist was extended and vowed to continue fighting for Vyshinsky's fate.
Vyshinsky was arrested last May by Ukrainian authorities on suspicion of supporting the self-proclaimed People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as treason.
Russian consular officials have been denied access to the journalist, with the Ukrainian authorities referring to his Ukrainian citizenship.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Vyshinsky's arrest was politically motivated. The Russian Foreign Ministry protested his detention, urging the Ukrainian authorities to stop the crackdown on media. Harlem Desir, the representative on freedom of the media at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), called for the journalist's release.
