MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th November, 2018) The World Health Organization (WHO) will continue its efforts to curb the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), despite deadly attacks and clashes in the country, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
On Sunday, media reported that 16 WHO staff members were evacuated from the city of Beni after a shell hit their building.
"WHO will continue to work side-by-side with @MinSanteRDC [DR Congo's Health Ministry] & our partners to bring this #Ebola outbreak to an end. We honour the memory of those who have died battling this outbreak & deplore the continuing threats on the security of those working to end it," the WHO chief wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Last week, at least seven UN peacekeepers along with an unknown number of Congolese military forces were killed during an operation in the DR Congo's North Kivu province, where international health workers are battling an Ebola epidemic.
The most recent outbreak of the viral disease, believed to be the worst on record for the African nation, was declared in August. As of last Monday, the Congolese Health Ministry has confirmed 295 cases of infection, of which 209 resulted in death.
